Planning

Since our founding in 1957, we have served the dynamic corporate and healthcare industries that created and sustain Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.

Our close and enduring relationships with clients, consultants, builders and many friends have sustained the firm's growth and prosperity, resulting in an ever-expanding body of excellent design work

We understand there is a positive feedback loop between projects and people: as we as practitioners grow, so does the firm. As a result, a majority of our stock ownership was transferred into an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) 5 years ago, so that all staff can further share in the success to which they daily contribute.   We believe that our core values of listening and learning from our clients, our consultants, our projects, and each other will serve us well for years to come.

We believe in...
Constant learning
We prioritize mentorship both internally with a proactive CIDP program and outside in the local design community with programs like the AIA Hard Hat Cafe. Design teams meet regularly for pin-ups and constructive critique. Friday Forum is a monthly series of design-related discussions in which the only rule is that the firm’s own projects are excluded.

Holistic sustainability
We are a certified Green Business. We were early members of the Northern California Chapter of the US Green Building Council and helped create its South Bay Branch. We present sustainability to anyone who will listen.

Working smarter with technology
Our IPD and BIM practices, including extensive 3D-4D documentation, design/assist, and Lean design and construction methodologies have led to demonstrated savings in time, materials, and costs—our work on the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Mountain View Center was awarded the first-ever AIASF Honor Award for Integrated Practice. We are actively working toward a model of full IPD and BIM integration with Sustainable Design and Construction where everyone, from designer to builder to owner, can assess real time feedback on the decisions being made that affect building performance and related community impacts.

Leading by example
We are leaders in the AIA, various organizations devoted to sustainability, and many local charitable organizations. As an office, we prioritize giving back to our community through office volunteering.

Having fun
Extracurricular activities bring us together for holiday and summertime parties, outrigger canoeing, bocce ball, bird watching, cycling, rock climbing, and softball, to name only a few.
HPS is responsive and in touch. Their understanding of BIM modeling is different from that of a traditional architectural firm and the outcome is that the entire project team has ownership.
